Mice Are Detroit’s Most Common Winter Pest
As temperatures drop in October and November, mice actively seek entry into warm homes. Detroit’s older housing stock — with gaps around pipes, foundations, and utility entries that have developed over decades — gives rodents plenty of entry points. A single female mouse can produce 5–10 litters per year. Professional exclusion — sealing entry points — combined with trapping is far more effective than trapping alone. An autumn exclusion treatment before the first cold snap is the best prevention.
Michigan Has Significant Termite Pressure
Eastern subterranean termites are present throughout Michigan, including Metro Detroit. While Michigan’s colder winters slow termite activity seasonally, established colonies are active year-round in heated homes. Detroit’s older wood-framed housing stock is particularly vulnerable. Annual termite inspections are recommended for all Metro Detroit homes.
